Natural light prevents myopia —Forwarding notification on implementing the activities on National Eye-care Day 2017

The Health and Family Planning Commissions, Education Department and Sports Bureau of all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, and the Health Bureau, Education Bureau and Sports Bureau of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps:

  June 6th, 2017 is the twenty-second National Eye-care Day, with the theme of Natural light prevents myopia. In order to popularize knowledge of scientific usage of eyes, prevent refractive errors and improve eye health status. The requests of the Eye Health Day’s activities are as following:

1. The prevention of myopia in teenagers is a hot question in the society. The results of myopia prevention in teenagers will influence the populace’s cultivation and comprehensive national power directly. Evidence-based clinical evidence at home and abroad indicates that keeping moderate outdoor activities and eyes in natural light helps decrease the prevalence of myopia in teenagers. Thus, the theme of the Eye Health Day isNatural light prevents myopia. All the Health and Family Planning Commissions, Education Departments and Sports Bureaus should attach great importance to myopia prevention in teenagers, make full use of advantages, propaganda scientific eye-using and myopia prevention knowledge, encourage teenagers to participate in outdoor activities, in order to promote teenagers’ eyesight protection work, increase healthy eye-using awareness and help teenagers form healthy eye-using habit.

2. All regions should strengthen communication and coordination among departments, identify specialized agencies and specialists and develop working plans. Related departments should encourage and help medical staff conduct health education lectures and consults to propagandize myopia prevention knowledge and help teenagers acquire healthy eye-using knowledge and methods. Schools should be encouraged to propagandize eye-using knowledge through broadcast, bulletin board, blackboard newspapers, class meetings and parents’ letters.  Making full use of Sports departments’ advantages and advocating teenager to participate in outdoor activities helps shorten the eye-using duration, such as table tennis and badminton.

3. All regions should collaborate with the news media and make full use of traditional and new media to propagate healthy eye-using knowledge, especially between children and teenagers, creating a “Government leadership, departments cooperation, experts guidance, school education, family concern” social atmosphere for teenagers’ eyesight protection. The Health and Family Planning Commissions, Education Department and Sports Bureau of all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government should analyze and report the activities situations to the Department of Medical Administration and Supervision of National Health and Family Planning Commissions and Department of Physical, Health and Arts Education of Ministry of Education and Youth Sports Department of General Administration of Sports.
