The Activity of Eye-Care Day-A Large Free Clinic and Consulting Activity in Shanghai Together with the Establishment Ceremony of the Lecture Group on Loving and Protecting Eyes

The June 6th, 2014 is the Nineteenth National Eye-Care Day, of which the theme is “Focusing on the eye health and preventing from diabetic blindness”. On the Eye-Care day this year, a large promotional and consulting activity about oculopathy together with the establishment ceremony of the lecture group on loving and protecting eyes which was sponsored by the Commission of Health and Family Planning of Shanghai, Federation of the Disabled of the Shanghai City and the Communist Youth League of China of Shanghai and undertaken by Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center has been held in the People’s Park Square of Huangpu district. Ophthalmologists from 13 municipal medical organizations answered all kinds of problems on eye diseases and popularized knowledge on prevention and treatment of diabetic oculopathy and other eye diseases on the spot to improve the people’s eye care ability.

On that day, Wang Panshi, deputy director of the Commission of the Family Planning of the Shanghai City declared that people should avoid eye diseases and live a healthy life. Institutions like the Charity Foundation of the Shanghai City sent Amblyopia Treatment Lasers to the children of migrant workers. The youth representative also read out the proposal about loving and protecting eyes that day, appealing everyone to protect eyesight and embrace a bright life. At the scene of free clinic, ophthalmologists reminded the citizens that blindness resulted from diabetic retinopathy could still be avoided, and early proper and timely treatments can control the development of diabetic retinopathy effectively, and thus reduce or delay the happening of blindness and severe visual impairment. They also warned that effective control of blood glucose, early and fixed-date ophthalmologic examination can be of great benefit to the prevention and delay of diabetic visual impairment.

Apart from diabetic oculopathy, other oculopathy that goes with age is also a great problem citizens show concerns for. Thus, many people arrived at the spot more than one hour earlier and queued up for the free clinic. Just in that short morning, an estimated number of over 1000 people took part in this free clinic and consulting activity. Ophthalmologists introduced that diabetes in youth and even in children were growing at an amazing speed so far in which the genetic factors played an important role. The youngest diabetic patient yet in our China is merely of 8 months. And thus, the limits should be no more set for the grown-ups when speaking of the diabetic retinopathy’s prevention and treatment. Instead, the range should be extended to people of all ages.

As users of electronic products are younger and younger, many children spend too much time on playing games, watching TVs and playing IPAD, which leads to myopia easily. Now that the summer vacation is arriving, in order to make more adolescents pay attention to the eye health, the Municipal Corporation together with the Commission of the Family Planning set up a lecture group on loving and protecting eyes for youths in Shanghai, which was composed of ophthalmologists from the municipal medical institutions like the First People’s Hospital of Shanghai City, the Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center of Shanghai City, Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, Xinhua hospital, Shanghai East Hospital and so on. On the establishment ceremony, Wangyu, Deputy Secretary of Shanghai city announced the members’ names of the first lecture group on loving and protecting eyes, which incudes Fu Yang, TangMin, Zhu Bijun from the First People’s Hospital of Shanghai City, Luo Qin, Li Shanshan, Zhu Jianfeng, Qiang Jun from the Eye Disease Prevention and treatment Center of Shanghai City, Ma Xiaoye from the Changzheng Hospital, Li Haiyan from the Xinhua Hospital and other 10 ophthalmologists like Hu Ying from the East Hospital. Combing with the project like “Loving Summer Class” and “12355 is On the Way” by the Municipal Corporation, these specialists will arrange professional lectures and loving and protecting eyes healthcare for the youth in the summer vacation. And Wang panshi, Deputy Director of the Commission of the Family Planning of Shanghai City, Xu Peili, council of the Shanghai Charity foundation, and Wang Yu, Deputy Secretary of the Shanghai city issued certificates for the representative of the ophthalmologists. Having bright eyes is really a dream for all the children. Shanghai Charity Foundation and Eye Disease Prevention and treatment Center of the Shanghai City started the prevention project of myopia, amblyopia and low vision for migrant workers’ children in Shanghai, and up till now, it has made examinations of eyesight and refractive, screening of eye diseases for over 120,000 children and has also provided them with free medical treatment if they were checked out to have eye diseases. And among these, children with mild visual impairment were treated with drug therapy, children whose uncorrected vision was lower than 0.4 were given free fitting and myopia-correctional glasses, and those checked out to have amblyopia or low vision would be transferred to the Eye Disease Prevention and treatment Center of the Shanghai City to make definite diagnosis. And up till now, this project has fit the glasses for 1800 children, given out myopia-control potions for 2700 children, and 170 children has been referred to Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center to make definite diagnosis.

On the Eye-Care day, the representative of the group of amblyopia children also arrived at the spot who benefited from the prevention project of myopia, amblyopia and low vision for migrant workers’ children in Shanghai which was founded by the Shanghai Charity Foundation. Chen Xi, Division Chief of CDC of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, Yu Huijiong, Division Chief of Rehabilitation Center of the Shanghai Federation of the Disabled, Xu Xiongxin, Minister of the Project Department of the Shanghai Charity Foundation ,Cao Liping, Director of the Equity of Shanghai Communist Youth League,Xu Xun, Director of the Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center of Shanghai City, Sun Haiyan, Sub-Bureau Chief of the Commission of Health and Family Planning of Huangpu district, Jiang Min, Secretary of the committee of the Communist Youth League of Huangpu district, Zhu Ruan, Vice Chairman of the Federation of the Disabled of Huangpu District, and Zhou Jianjun, Director of CDC of Huangpu district presented the Amblyopia Treatment Laser to the representative of the youth. Meantime, the representative of the youth also read out the proposal of loving and protecting eyes, appealing to all the students to pay attention to the eye health, and embraced the great life with bright eyes.
